She openly shared about the ridicule she faced for decades, mentioning an instance where a magazine labeled her as “Dumpy, Frumpy and Downright Lumpy,” a moment that deeply affected her. Approaching 70, Oprah Winfrey reflects on her journey toward sustained healthy living, shedding the weight of shame along the way. Wrestling with weight fluctuations for five decades, she grappled with the misconception that willpower alone could solve it. However, post-2021 knee surgery, she embarked on a transformative hike, awakening a newfound vigor within herself.

“After knee surgery, I started hiking, setting new distance goals each week,” Oprah shares. “I felt stronger, more fit, and more alive than I’d felt in years.”

During a profound panel discussion named ‘The State of Weight,’ she had a breakthrough realization. “I realized I’d been blaming myself all these years for being overweight,” Oprah recalls. This led her to consult her doctor and incorporate the medication into her routine to manage without fluctuating.

Beyond medication, Oprah emphasized the significance of holistic lifestyle adjustments. Setting a daily meal cut-off at 4 p.m., adopting WeightWatchers’ principles, and staying hydrated with a gallon of water daily became integral parts of her routine. Furthermore, she highlighted the importance of regular hikes, workouts, and the symbiotic relationship between medication and an active lifestyle in achieving her health goals.

Initially skeptical about weight-loss medication, she now sees it as a supportive addition, recognizing that “Obesity is a disease.” “It’s not about willpower — it’s about the brain.”

“It’s everything,” Oprah emphasizes regarding her holistic approach. “I know that if I’m not also working out and vigilant about all the other things, it doesn’t work for me.”

She mentioned taking medication before Thanksgiving to manage her eating, and the difference was stark: she gained just half a pound compared to the previous year’s eight-pound gain. “This,” she said, “helped silence the noise around food for her.”

Oprah Winfrey has always been open about the challenges she’s faced regarding her weight. She’s getting closer to her target weight of 160 pounds, but what’s more important to her is the progress she’s made over time.

Even though she’s still seven pounds away from her goal, the number isn’t the main focus for Winfrey. She’s thrilled about the strides she’s taken in the two years since her surgery. For her, it’s about embracing a more vibrant and fulfilling life.

Living in Hawaii, she once looked at a mountain every morning and hoped to climb it. Last year over Christmas I did it,” she said. “It felt like redemption.”
